Whitesburg in November: cool, crisp, frosty mornings, shorter, - TopicsExpress

Whitesburg in November: cool, crisp, frosty mornings, shorter, sunny, warm afternoons & cool evenings, smells of burning leaf piles, crackling fires in fireplaces & coal stoves, smoke curling out chimneys. Folks getting coal pile deliveries, chopping wood preparing for the cold winter months lurking around the corner. Food from the gardens canned & stored, was plentiful. My Banks grandparents had a cellar apart from the main house for storing canned goods, where there was also an extra bedroom on the top floor with a pot-belly stove for warmth. My Collins grandparents had a cellar underneath the front porch. Each was well-stocked with enough food to share. The smokehouses, where meat hung from the rafters, seemed eerily fascinating to me. I could hardly wait for the Thanksgiving holiday to arrive, filling the house with all the smells of the abundant meal that would be shared with relatives!
