Whiteville, TN... circa 1955 And then... Paul Drake (Perry Masons personal detective)...on his way to a Private Eye convention in Washington D.C. stops at a small, out of the way country town in Tennessee called, Whiteville (see below FIRST picture.) Low on fuel, he pulls into the Esso gas station there and the service bell rings but nobody comes to see what he wants. He toots his horn but no station attendant appears. Confused, Paul exits his 52 Buick convertible and goes inside but the place is empty...deserted. A few minutes later while walking up the street (see SECOND picture,) he discovers that the whole town is empty...no one is there! Even the courthouse and police station are empty of people! The stores all all open, but completely deserted! He yells out into the street but nobody comes...nobody answers. Hes beginning to get this very creepy feeling...the hairs on the back of his neck are even standing up. Theres an odd humming sound coming from a nearby alleyway, and he walks that way to investigate, and just before he steps into the alley his eyes catch the headlines on a nearby newspaper rack; ATOMIC TEST CARRIED OUT AT OAK RIDGE LAST NIGHT! MANY SCIENTISTS ALARMED AT POSSIBLE RIFT IN TIME! DANGER THEY SAY! LEAD OAK RIDGE ATOMIC SCIENTIST SCOFFS AT SUCH FEARS! CALLS THEM GROUNDLESS & STUPID! Uh-oh! Paul says low and under his breath as the odd humming sound suddenly gets louder and louder and a dark, oblong shadow the size of a Trailways bus starts crawling up out of the semi-lit alleyway towards him!
