Whither the NFL? Ill preface this rant by saying Ive been an ardent NFL (and Bears fan) since I was a kid; thats 50+ years. Roger Goodell, Commissioner and $40+ Million/yr mouthpiece for the owners, is making changes in the name of safety (its actually to increase offensive point output) that is ruining the game I love. These changes force defenses to play soft and make experienced officials make lots of lousy calls (my thinking is that theyre not sure what to do and err on the side of the owners). The CBA is resulting in a two-tiered structure with very high-priced veterans and rookies; the days of the journeyman NFL player are numbered. The agreement also results in lots fewer practices, which in turn results in player injuries and the first couple of regular season games turn into preseason games as the players get into game shape. I understand the need for player safety and that the owners need to protect their huge investments in the players, but the game is changing to the point where they dont let the guys play. The players know its a dangerous and violent game and understand what theyre getting themselves into; and get paid handsomely for that. Roger, wise up: if youre starting to lose me, youre killing the game. But then again I guess you had to see Ray Rice knock his lady cold on tape; seeing him dragging her unconscious from an elevator wasnt evidence enough. Keep your head in the sand, Roger, and do anything for those soulless owners...
