Who Introduced You in Cockfighting? Do you still remember how you got started in cockfighting. Who was the person who introduced you in this one of a kind of sport? For sure, many of us were exposed in chicken when we were still at a young age. During that time, we already understood that this was a great hobby. We really entertained with the chicken fighting until we learned how to raise chickens. Maybe you’re also playing the chickens by putting a wire a wire to their legs; it served as a gaff. But I heard stories that at first they hated chicken and kicking it. They can’t explain why they became a cocker. Is this the more you hate, the more you love relationship? Just kidding. Some of us was influenced through our grandfather, father, friends and even neighbors who were also a die hard cockfighters. Maybe you became an apprentice to the gameyard of our father or any relatives. Our work was to feed to their chickens. If we belong to the family of cockers; we are assuming that our passion for chickens is already running into our veins. That’s why it will never relinquish as long as we are still alive on earth. It is really true that once a cocker will always be a cockers. But there are some of cockers who are late bloomers. They became a cockfighter when they are already old. Well, it doesn’t matter; the most important is they became one of us. It is not too late for them to explore the many aspects of our sport. At first, they were also looking this sport as a gamble. But when they learned the positive aspects of cockfighting they decided to become a cockfighters. Once they were just a bettor until they became a breeder. Do you still remember the first time when you handled a chicken? What was your feeling? Are you excited ot are you felt nervous? You knew that some chickens was very agressive and a man fighter. Whoever introduced you in cockfighting, you must be thankful to them because you discovered the wonderful world of cockfights. We always hear from other people that we should live to the fullest. As a cocker, this is our way to express ourselves and to fulfill the emptiness that we feel in our lives WHY I LOVE SABONG AND HOW I GOT STARTED? I love sabong for many good reasons and just few to mention and i would like to give little emphasis: 1.THE BETTING-The thrill of VICTORY & the agony of DEFEAT.i still treasure the memories of great fight when given 10-7 and 10-6 odds and won.you made a lot of friends afterwards and meeting all amazing people. 2.THE CHANCE-put on bets i may say great equalizer, there is no dominant fighter.everybody has the same chance to win and succeed, whether or not you do better than others is entirely up to you and your DEDICATION,PASSION,WILL & SKILL. 3.THE FIGHTING-Its like an adrenaline rush, blood pumping as you watch your bird do what is does naturally to prove himself that he is the king of the pit.But of course not all the time you get the happy feelings especially when the other persons bird proves to your bird its not the king of the pit.WINNING is just a BONUS.plus the fact the EXCITEMENT & ENTERTAINMENT they give you when they just go at it. 4.THE STRENGTH OF THE BIRDS-Many years ago as a young boy I attended my first cockfight , it was not a tournament but a big hack event in the town. It was very well attended by many short heel cockers of the day. There was one particular match I remember as if it was yesterday. A whitehackle vs a grey, the whitehackle was a blinker. The handlers billed them and set them down, they ran across the pit and smashed into each other and on that first buckle the whitehackles good eye was hit so now he is totally blind and at the mercy of the grey. For a young kid it was a hard thing to watch that grey with such an unfair advantage begin to cut down the blind whitehackle. With each buckle I could see the whitehackle wilt a bit more but still hanging in there pecking blindly trying to fight. It was plain to see that the fight was not going to go on much longer but as fate would have it the grey came into the whitehackle head on which by luck allowed him to get a bill hold on the greys neck and with one power shot he brained the gray and killed him dead.As the whitehackles handler cut off his gaffs the whitehackle is crowing up a storm, but being completely blind his fate was sealed. He was taken to the chopping block where he was put down. That fight was what made me a gamefowl lover.(ADOPTED FROM AMERICAN BREEDERS JOURNAL used to inspire fellow sabungeros). 5.THE ENERGY-I love it because it is taking the natural ability of an animal and trying to breed where it needs to be competitively win at major levels then you have to maintain these bloodlines to were you can consistently complete it is a PRIDE AND HONOR hobby it has nothing to do with the money a lot of time the betting is your pride talking, i enjoy the fighting dont get me wrong but i love these rooster and being around them & feeling them its all a pleasure to me!watching an eggs produce a chick out of a great cock & good broodhen then watching that chick grow of into a silly looking stag then as little more time comes you have to pen him up then comes cool weather and you dub him wow what a man!you have a beautiful rooster and you condition him and get him ready to do battle trim him up good and when you get there he is acting good, they call them up here you go two years of waiting on him caring & loving him all comes down to this moment, hate to see him die but knowing in his mind that he would rather die than quit fighting or not fight you go in put with him ,build up and turn then loose and he just flys through a rooster you picked them back-up and walk-out a winner...wheww nothing in the world like it gives me the shakes just writing about them,i dont love them.....im obsessed with them they haveo vertaken my mind they are all, think about them day & night the only thing i put in front of my roosters is my wife and family thats it....energy to the next level.... 6.THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST- or should i say the GAME OF DEATH,i love it for the physiology science necessary in conditioning the cocks for war and all those factors youve put in coming into full circle in the fit.i love it seeing the gameness of the cocks in battle, the heart and will to win of a gamecock is unmatched compared to any other species. 7.MAKING FRIENDS AFTERWARDS-the COMMADERY among groups,i love sabong for it will last me in my entire lifetime and it will never get old.HAPPY & SAD MOMENTS sharing ideas/exchange point of views with old & new friends in line and able to learn something new & have a challenging hobby for the rest of my life. 8.THE MOST INTEGRAL PART and why i love sabong to the fullest BREEDING -The challenge from shell to pit and trying new crosses,to be able to hold your blood up after a meet & know that you put the cock & hens together from years past and is successful.BREEDING is really interesting it takes a lot of works.I love it for the GENETIC SCIENCE it entails including the animal husbandry commitment it requires. HOW I GET STARTED WITH SABONG? Well i am a 3rd generation sabungero in the family,my grandfather papa regino(may his soul rest in peace) who was a security guard with the logging company before used to buy roosters and placed a bet on them.etc.,and who was succeeded by my father papang mario who is the eldest among 16 siblings. As i recalled my father who is an electrician & tv/radio technician and owned a repair shop @ the town of lamitan basilan province,it is situated @ the heart of the town, where he gain access in just buying roosters and fight them and mostly he always look for the SENYALES ,what they believe will bring them to victory, but in scientific method of breeding all these so called SENYALES (PAMPALAKAS LOOB LAMANG) are merely DEFECTS/DISADVANTAGE/MALFUNCTION OF PAIRING OF GENES....so my story starts like this....As a young boy i grew up with my father backyard gamefowls,@ the age of 5 yrs old i remembered assisting my father delousing/feeding his chickens around 30 heads....but he never breeds....there are times i got beat by his manfighter cock which i remembered i cried out loud but it does not stop me helping my father then he got a job abroad so he left me living with my mother who is a public school teacher and my love for chickens became dormant as my father is not around.-no chickens at this times-i just used to watch the gameyard of our neighbors and pity i dont have even a single rooster-at the age of 10yrs old i was at grade 4 when the yuletide season comes my mom ask me what i like most to be my Christmas present?i remembered i jumped and shouted without even crossing my fingers answered her... i want a rooster!!!.....so my mom i remembered bought me a rooster 150 pesos worth the mestiso line and after the year ends and back to school i gave that mestiso line to my uncle victor younger brother of my father may (his soul rest in peace) and what i heard he fought it and it was a draw and during my high school days i remembered my uncle tereso alviar may (his soul rest in peace) the person who really influence me a lot in cockfighting, and i thanked him for where i am now its because of him....anyway every saturday/sunday he would ask me to carry his rooster going to the pit and tupada in some barangays we even walked for hours before arriving in the venue...and my most memorable days during an event accidentally my 5 pesos bill grew almost 40 folds (195pesos)because in that event the DEHADO dominated the the game it was like this 9 straight wins then 1 win LLAMADO then again same regla 9 wins DEHADO 1 win LLAMADO...because my fear to loose i did not double my bet.if i doubled my bet maybe its not only 195 pesos...but as a young boy and 1st timer to bet its an accomplishment others may say its my LUCKY STRIKE ...(BEGINNERS LUCK).it started when the guy beside me shouted DOBLADO 10-5 and his waiving a 10 pesos bill so i accept his challenge and i won, then history is the rest....,it was a 2 cock derby where my uncle ended as co-champions ,the 1st cock alimbuyogin won but die after the fight and 2nd the mayahin who i believe carries the blood of mclean hatch won convincingly...then i went for college, year (1995)and soon abroad for 8years working in the hospital(middle east) till (2011) almost 16years i never again engaged in sabong but it was suddenly when my father request me to buy him a fighting cock but instead i bought him a TRIO and i said this time papa you need to BREED before you FIGHT....so the interest for gamecocks rises again and we started our small farm what we called MANFALLA GAMEFARM.........and now we are still in the journey to LEARN,EXPLORE,FIND & SEEK the right formula.....SIGNATURE/WINNING LINES..... HOPE THIS STORY COULD INSPIRE OUR FELLOWS SABUNGEROS.....many thanks to ROCKSOLID GAMEFARM especially Sir Tin for giving us the opportunity to share our good/bad, old/new, & happy/sad memories with sabong......MABUHAY PO ANG SAMBAYANANG SABUNGERO,,MAGINOO.MARANGAL AT TAPAT...LIKE THE SAYING GOES DO EVERYTHING TO WIN EXCEPT CHEAT...... KEEP ON COCKING AND ADVANCED MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR........HAVE A BLESSED HAPPY YEARS AHEAD TO COME....WELCOME YEAR 2014!!!...................The Thrill and Excitement in Cockfighting How do you feel every time you’re fighting your chicken in a cockpit arena? Are you relax or you feel nervous? Is there a time that you want to wee to your pants because of extreme nervous? If you have only heart problem, you will suddenly die at the very moment. Maybe that will be happened if your bet is too big and you have a doubt that you’re going to win unless you’re such a big time cocker who don’t care about money because you have plenty of it. We already witnessed big names in cockfights who are betting million pesos in every fight. It seems that is only a small amount of money of them. Unlike ordinary cockers, they are only betting minimum. It is only natural for us to feel nervous; not only in cockfighting, but in every aspect of our lives. It doesn’t mean that when you feel this feeling you’re already feared of something. This is only a part of every game. Nervous is just temporary, afterwards it will give you hope and motivation and of course, thrill and excitement too. The important is you know how to handle nervous and you have a trust to your chicken. Even when you lose in a fight, you’re going to be okay. You know that there always a next time in cockfighting. Maybe you’re not lucky today, but tomorrow there is a possibility that you could win. This is the nature of our sport. The good thing is you have only two choices, “sa meron o sa wala” and no one is denominating here. So, every one of us has a chance to become a champion in a derby. On the contrary side, do you already felt that you’re in ecstasy while fighting your chicken? It seems you’re like Major Doromal who always in a happy mood because every time when he fights he always kicking in the air as a martial artist. While he is doing this the audience chanting him with “Yah, Yah”! What a funny scenario, it seems that you’re watching a kung fu movie. There are also some cockers love to dance when they are fighting. They don’t care even other people looking at him as a fool. But for the open minded, there is nothing about their behavior. They only want to magnetize the positive energy to their chickens. There is no problem even if they would lose. At least, they enjoyed their fights. In the end, cockfighting is not about is not about winning or losing the game; but is about how enjoy the sport. For the thrill and excitement in our circles never ends. Happy cocking, everyone!
