Who Is Chelsea Target Bruma? Published on July 16th, 2013 Written by: Christopher Brophy Expectations in Portugal and Sporting Lisbon are high for this 18-year-old winger. Often considered in his homeland to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo, who as well as Bruma came through the Sporting Lisbon Youth Academy. Bruma’s agent has confirmed this week that both Chelsea and Galatasaray have made offers for the winger’s services, both of which were rejected by Sporting. Bruma wants to terminate his contract with Sporting and believes that because his contract expired at the end of June he is free to talk to any club. However, Sporting are disputing the winger’s claims that Bruma triggered an automatic renewal clause in his contract. Bruma’s transfer situation may not be simple but if Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign his fellow countryman then it is likely that he will manage to. Leaving us here at Touchline Talk to ask the question: Who is Bruma? Profile Armindo Tue Na Bangna, commonly known as Bruma, was born in Bissau Guinea on the 24th of October 1994. Bruma moved to Portugal when he was a child and at the age of 12 he joined Sporting Lisbon’s youth set-up. Bruma made his senior debut for Sporting B during the 2012-13 season and scored his first goal for the club against C.F. Uniao on the 6th of December. A game of mixed emotions as he would score a brace in the match before being sent off. Sporting B eventually lost the match 3-2. The winger would go on to score 6 goals for Sporting B before being promoted to the Sporting Lisbon main squad in February 2013. He would go on to score his first top-level goal in his second match with the Lions, scoring the opener in a 3-2 win way to Gil Vicente FC. Portugal Although Guinean born, Bruma plays for Portugal. He has represented Portugal at all levels of youth football and was part of the Under-20 side that reached the last 16 of the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. Bruma was awarded the Silver Ball at the tournament; he was the second top scorer, managing 5 goals in 4 games. Style Of Play He is considered by many in Portugal to be the most promising young winger since Cristiano Ronaldo. However, in terms of style of play he is more like Luis Nani. Like the Manchester United player, Bruma is slight, has a low centre of gravity and likes to take on players. Even as an 18-year-old his athletic traits are clearly visible. He is quick, even over long distances, and has strong agility that makes him very quick in tight spaces. Comfortable playing on either the left or the right wing in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1, he is mostly utilised on the right for Sporting. He possesses a brilliant vision and link-up play and is a very creative winger and is able to confuse opposition players with his speed and creativity. Unlike many young wingers Bruma is not concerned with using fancy tricks to beat defenders, he often cuts inside. Verdict Chelsea will always be looking to add quality players to their roster, and Bruma certainly has the potential to be a great player. However, Chelsea are not in desperate need of another winger with Eden Hazard, Victor Moses and Oscar, to name but a few that can play in Bruma’s position. The London club have also recently acquired the services of 22-year-old Andre Schurrle, a young talent who is able to play as both a winger and forward. Bruma is still untested at the highest level of football having only played half a season in Sporting Lisbon’s first team. However, the potential is there, the only question reaming is: would Chelsea be the right club for him to fulfil his potential? With the re-appointment of Jose Mourinho and promised stability that the Portuguese’s continued employment would bring would give time for players like Bruma to develop at the club. It is still unlikely, however, if Bruma were to sign to the London club he would be making many first team appearances this season. Bruma may - like Lukaku and Courtois before him - be loaned out to clubs to aid in his development should he move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
