Who do you donate money to, and why? We live in pretty comfy circumstances, yet we are made to feel like we have to horde for our retirement, our comfort, our lifestyle, our children, blah blah blah... We have somehow ended up better off than a large % of the worlds population - and I doubt many of us can say we deserve it more than those who live tougher lives (I for one am not a believer that I earned my right to live comfortably - it was handed to me). These days there are so many causes - and add to that the number of phone calls asking for donation I think its time more than ever to be conscious, or risk becoming complacent and dismissive. I know a lot of you are very considered when it comes to donations and humanity in general, so Id love to get a discussion going about what you know, why and where you donate, and what you believe. Neen and I regularly donate to Amnesty International, Animals Australia, World Society for the Protection of Animals, The Wilderness Society, and we give a fair percentage of our government family allowance to the Save the Children fund (as ours dont need the amount we receive, as opposed to other children throughout the world). We also donate irregularly to specific causes presented to us either by our subscriptions (Getup, change.org, etc) phone calls, door knocking or friends causes... covering a wide range of other things such as medical research, disability, climate, animal protection, child welfare, international aid, emergency aid, you name it... Our main objective is to spread it around as evenly as possible amongst the things we believe in - but its hard to reject one in favour of another. With so many organisations setup now, I really want to know our money is going direct to the cause with as little as possible being siphoned off to admin, advertising, and various other associated costs... So.... ?
