Who has our moments? “What is man…that You should set Your mind upon him…every morning…every moment?” (Job 7:17, 18). When a New Year comes round, we commit it with special earnestness to the Lord. But as we do so, are we not conscious of a feeling that even a year is too much for us to deal with? Then as the Monday mornings come round, we thankfully commit the opening week to Him…but not even the six or seven days are close enough to our hand; even tomorrow exceeds our tiny grasp; so we find the need of considering our lives as a matter of day by day, but if we commit the days to our Lord, why not the hours and why not the moments? Do you ask, “But what use can He make of mere moments?” Look back at how often a great work grew out of a mere moment in the life on one of God’s servants. It is not so often a whole sermon as a single short sentence that wings God’s arrow to a heart. It is seldom a whole conversation but some sudden turn of thought which comes with the electric touch of God’s power. Sometimes only a look (and what is more momentary?) has been used by Him. Oh, how much we have missed by not placing our moments at His disposal! Lord, my time is in Thine hand, weak and helpless as I am, surely You can make me stand. (Frances Ridley Havergal)
