Who is Hussain? Maybe the real question people need to ask is who murdered Hussain? It is rather ironic that the very people who murdered Hussain (radiallahu anhu) are the ones who mourn him, and belittle and mock those who do not follow in their guilt-ridden footsteps. Their forefathers were the very people who tricked, betrayed and ultimately sent him and his family to their death. Due to the gravity of what they did, their followers out of unconscious guilt punish themselves every year on the tenth of Muharram (day of Ashura) by way of self-flagellation. This story began with Ali (radiallahu anhu) and the Jew Abdullah Ibn Saba, who began a conspiracy against him, by attributing divine qualities to him, which his followers (Shia from Kufa) were receptive towards. After Ali’s death, his son Hasan (radiallahu anhu) declared that he did not trust these people, whom he blamed for the death of his father. Hasan said: By Allah I think Muawwiyah would be better for me than these people who claim that they are my followers (Abu Mansur at-Tabarsi; al-Ihtijaj, volume 2, page 290-291) Due to the level of distrust he had for these people, Hasan (radiallahu anhu), despite the great fitan taking place during that period in Islamic history, gave the Caliphate to Muawwiyah (radiallahu anhu). This was the first overt sign of betrayal from the Shia that would eventually lead to the death of Hussain (radiallahu anhu). For within their books is a clear saying by Hasan that reads: By Allah, I handed over power to him for no reason other than the fact that I could not find any supporters from the Shia. Had I found supporters I would have fought against him day and night until Allah decides between us. But I know the Shia of Kufa. I have experience of them. The bad ones of them are no good to me. They have no loyalty, nor any integrity in words or deeds. They claim that their hearts are with us, but their swords are drawn against us. (Al-Kafi, volume 8, page 288) Once Muawwiya (radiallahu anhu) passed away, the Caliphate was passed onto his son Yazid, which the Shia of Kufa were not happy with. It was in this moment (month of Ramadan) that the Kufi Shia sent 12,000 letters proclaiming their love for Hussain (radiallahu anhu), the brother of Hasan. Within these letters contained the lies that sent Hussain to his death. They, the Kuffans, assured Hussain (radiallahu anhu) of their loyalty and declared that 18,000 of them would pay allegiance to him as their new leader. They evoked sympathy and guilt within the grandson of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that caused him to begin his fateful journey to Iraq, where he would eventually be betrayed and then be slain. Having heard that the cousin of Hussain (Muslim ibn Aqil) had arrived in Kufa to speak to the Kuffans about their allegiance to Hussain, Yazid sent 18 men to find and kill him. Knowing of this threat, the Shia of Kufa who openly declared allegiance to Hussain (radiallahu anhu) showed their second sign of major betrayal by deserting his cousin in his time of need. The fact that deserting him was not enough, they notified the men sent to kill Muslim ibn Aqil of his whereabouts who then found and killed him. Before his death Muslim Ibn Aqil declared: Oh Allah, You be the judge between us and our people; they deceived us and deserted us. Having witnessed his execution, not one single Kufi Shia, who pledged allegiance to Hussain (radiallahu anhu), went to his aid. Do not forget, while they were 18,000 strong, those who executed Hussains cousin were only 18 in number. Upon reaching Iraq, Hussain found that the Shia of Kufa had joined the army that was sent to stop him. As a result, he decided to travel to Karbala, where this army, who had pledged allegiance to him, intercepted him and were now prepared to fight and kill him. In this moment Hussain said these famous words: I did not come to Kufa without being asked to come by you. It was obligatory for you to stick to your promise and to obey me, but you broke your promise and your pledge of allegiance to me. This is not something strange or new to us, as you people proved disloyal and treacherous to my father, by brother (Hasan) and to my cousin Muslim ibn Aqil. If you did not wish for me to come, then I will return back to where I came from. (Tareekh al-Umam wal-Malook; 2/228-229) Now the Kufi Shias biggest act of betrayal happened when they denied they had ever written to Hussain, despite him taking out the letters and reading some of the names and pleas written to him. In this moment Hussain (radiallahu anhu) the grandson of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) was betrayed and murdered. The famous Shia scholar Mullah Baqir Majlasee narrates Hussain (radiallahu anhu) said: May Allahs curse be upon you and your intentions, you tyrannical, disloyal and treacherous Shia, you have carved by chest with a dagger. (Jalaa al-Aayoon, page 468) So who was the man who killed Hussain? The man who murdered Hussain (radiallahu anhu) was a Shia named Shimr bin Thil-Jawshan, as recorded in Shia books (al-Qummi, Safinatun-Najaat, volume 4, page 492). Furthermore, Mullah Baaqir Majlasee said: In the end it was these disloyal Shia who martyred Hussain. (Jalaa al-Aayoon, page 468) Alamah Qadhi Saushastree Shii said: There is no need to establish evidence the murderers of Imam Hussain were Kufi Shia (as this was the case) and as for the claim that they were Sunni, it is against the reality and requires evidence. (Majaalis al-Mumineen, page 9, printed in Iran. In a Shia book it is declared that: The killers of Hussain (radiallahu anhu) were all Kufi and no one from amongst them was a Shaamee (Syrian) or a Hijaazee (from Makkah or Madinah.) (Khulaasatul Masaain Shii, page 201) So years after murdering Hussain (radiallahu anhu) the Kufi Shia tried to atone for what they did and thus went to Karbala and began the ritual of loud mourning, lamenting and self-flagellation. This was done to punish themselves for the murder they committed and thus is the origins of the Shia rituals done today. Therefore, those who partake in these activities today follow in the footsteps of the Kufi Shia who killed Hussain (radiallahu anhu). The problem is, the majority of the Shia do not understand why they hurt themselves during the day of Ashura. Speak to them and educate them about the true nature of what they do and why they do it. Having personally spoken to some Shia over the last 2 years about this, they have stopped taking part in this practice, Alhumdulillah. Educating them is extremely important and through Dawah you can make a positive difference to their lives InshaAllah. - Brother Aamar Alam
