Who is Watching the Purse Strings In Asheboro? by Gary Hulin It is the my understanding that the mayor of Asheboro has made comments to the effect that he is interested in enticing senior citizens to Asheboro making Asheboro a Registered Preferred Retirement Community. That is wondereful idea, one that makes a lot of sense. What does not make sense is the misuse of by the Asheboro City Council and the Randolph Board of Commissioners who gave the Asheboro Senior Citizen Association $500,000.00 of our tax money to purchase one of the abandoned Acme McCrary buildings to renovate into a place where senior citizens could hang out at night. This is primarily the same group of elites that spent tax payers money to do design studies for soccer fields to be added to the N. Asheboro Park. I had offered to sell my property to them and they had an assessment made of the property and you also footed the bill for design studies that were made. Everything was in place in the transaction when suddenly my lawyer told me that the councils were counting on matching State funds to carry out the project and it had to be used in another location South of Asheboro. My question, which I never got an an answer to, was How can a board of responsible men and women so carelessly spend tax payers money without knowing the source of the money they would spend? The call for a senior citizens retirement home is a good idea, as a beginning, but someone with vision needs to address your board. The waste in government needs to stop. Its working against all of us! It makes suspect of those that are running your city and county boards. They could have had 18 acres next to N. Asheboro Park for less than the $500.00 they spent for a building they will have to then renovate. My guess is whoever owned the Old Acme-McCaray building has to much influence on these boards. In addition to a viable, healthy, vibrant community this property also has other potential IN ADDITION to that already described with 175 frontage on N.Fayetreville Street and a 50 easement that extends from N. Fayetteville to the North Asheboro Park. This 900 plus is ideal for a business up front and up to 7 homes along a 900 + connector to N. Asheboro Park. Was this property just ignored or is this part of Asheboros problem with bringing in people who want to develop and provide jobs for the citizens of Asheboro. There seems to be little vision among the members of the Asheboro City Council as well as the Randolph County Board of Commissioners. I am a retired Architect. Years ago I was involved with the design and development of the Well Spring Retirement Community in Greensboro as well as two retirement homes in Oregon and several Senior Citizen Community Centers. I have gained some understanding of the potential value this property could have to the citizens of Asheboro if properly developed to provide a place for senior citizens. They need more than a place to just hang around at night. The correct devlopment of N. Asheboro requires this property and it has been available for the same price for nearly 10 years! I had approached the City with the idea of Cluster units which gathers several Units into smaller areas and allowed a better use of common space for such things as gardening and outdoor activities. Alot of greenspace would add to a tranquil surround for our elderly and would blend nicely with the N. Asheboro Park. The vision could be for walking trails and common areas for outdoor activities such as gardening with cluster units and a community center. Connectors can be added to enhance attraction to the north Asheboro Business District as well as N. Asheboro Park. It would not be, and should not be a box to allow the senior citizens to just hang out. For Gods sake...there is more to life than warehousing our seniors. Not everyone has padded their retirement with the hard earned money of others. I now wonder if the people living in North Asheboro has had anyone working for them that should have been aware of these things going on at the City Council and the Randolph County Board meetings. -GWH Who is Watching the Purse Strings In Asheboro? by Gary Hulin It is the my understanding that the mayor of Asheboro has made comments to the effect that he is interested in enticing senior citizens to Asheboro making Asheboro a Registered Preferred Retirement Community.
