Who is Yodit? Yodit Kifleyesus Desta is a dedicated mother, devoted teacher and loyal community leader from the Bronx, New York Yodit teaches mathematics and science at the Bronx Academy High School A dedicated Mother who fought for her child Yodit is a mother of two beautiful and intelligent daughters whom she raised to be remarkable individuals Her daughter, Habben is in her first year of college, but her first born Samrawit passed away in 2009 at the age of 17 after a 4 years long battle with cancer Yodit’s dedication to her daughter during her illness was exemplary She did everything that can be done to get the best medical care for her daughter She spent hours and days without a break by her daughter To make matters worse, Yodit lost her mother and brother consecutively During this extremely difficult time, Yodit was the pillar of strength not only for her family but for her friends, church and community members We marveled at her strength, patience, and faith Although her anguish was evident, she helped all of us to grieve together and draw strength from one another She overcame her grief through her faith She accepted her heart-breaking loss with the words “Let His will be done”; and moved forward Despite her bereavement, Yodit became dedicated to assist newly settled refugees She became an elder sister to them, as she guided and worked hard to find them information, resources for education, employment and assisted them to get accustomed to the American system and culture All the while, Yodit was dealing with challenges from thyroid and heart disease Her Stroke On 7th May 2013, Yodit suffered a massive stroke As a result, she lost movement in her right side, as well as her ability to speak and comprehend language Thanks to the therapies she has received so far (21 days at Burke Rehabilitation Centre, 37 days at United Hebrew Nursing and Rehabilitation) she has regained some strength in her right side Her insurance coverage is running out and she is now left with only 11 days of outpatient therapy Her ability to speak and comprehend language is still poor It is estimated that she will need at least two years of speech therapy and a minimum of one year of physical and occupational therapy She has no insurance coverage for these therapies While all is being done to find alternative means to continue the therapies, be it through relevant government agencies or charities, it is imperative that the therapies are not interrupted Uninterrupted therapy can mean the difference between a full recovery and life with serious disability, or worse Moreover, Yodit is facing challenges to afford appropriate housing (wheel chair accessible and fitted bathroom) Who are we? We are Yodit’s friends fundraising to help cover Yodit’s out of pocket medical and other essential day to day living expenses Yodit’s financial resources were depleted due to the long and expensive medical treatment for her late daughter As you can understand, this has been extremely stressful time for her remaining daughter, Habben, who had to interrupt her college studies and is now the primary care taker This donation will alleviate her financial worries Yodit had a passion for helping everyone in need, and now it is up to us to help her during her time of need So please help Yodit!!!
