Who remembers where they were fifty years ago today? If you were in school in Lebanon, you remember they took us all to the auditorium and told us what had happened. The image thats stuck in my mind is Mrs. Gillespie helping someone fly a kite after lunch (it was cool, windy and clear). And they flew the flag at half staff for twenty one days, which you could see on the high school campus from our second grade classroom. I think Oswald acted alone, but that other people were involved, each unbeknownst to the other. I think he shot at Kennedy and hit him, but in the Zapruder film, it looks like the fatal shot came from the front to me. I went to San Antonio with my wife on a business trip in March of 2000. It was my first trip to Texas, my first time flying, and Im a longtime Cowboys fan, so it was a treat for me. A couple we knew who were living in Houston drove over and took in the town with us that afternoon, which made it even better. When we got downtown to the Hilton, they put us on the fourth or fifth floor. Tired from the trip and just wanting some fresh air, I stepped out on the balcony to look around. I hadnt been standing there long when a two seat convertible with the top down and a guy riding shotgun in it rounded the corner and passed directly beneath me, doing maybe twenty five or thirty miles an hour. I dont know why, maybe because I was heady from the whole experience, but it struck me how difficult it would have been to even hit the car, let alone someone in it, especially in the head. Oswald would have been one or two floors higher than I was, much further from his target, and Kennedys car was going over forty miles an hour. He would have had to work a bolt action, re-aim, and fire three shots in seven seconds or less. Even snipers shoot at stationary targets, with purpose built rifles, and they have spotters. Thats why I believe what I do, and have ever since. Lastly, if poor Jackie had just thought to pull him down in the seat after the first shot, it might have saved his life, even if he hadnt been able to continue in his capacity as president.
