Who was Qasim ibn Hasan a.s. He was the son our second Imam, Imam Hasan a.s and Bibi Umm Farwa a.s. Qasim a.s, although only 14 years old, had, like his cousins Aun a.s and Mohammed a.s, learn fencing from his uncles Hazrat Abbas a.s and his cousin Ali Akbar a.s. Abbas ibn Ali a.s. was very fond of Qasim a.s. On the eve of 10th Muharram On the night before the Battle of Karbala, Imam Hussain a.s. was passing by Bibi Umm Farwas a.s. tent, he heard Qasim a.s. saying to his mother, Mother, tomorrow Uncle Abbas a.s, Ali Akbar a.s and I will defend uncle Hussain a.s. Mother, if I get killed please do not weep for me. Bibi Umm Farwa a.s replied, My son although I dearly love you, I shall not weep for you. Nothing will make me prouder than to see my son give his life for Islam. When Imam Hussain a.s. heard this conversation he prayed to Allah to bless Qasim a.s. and Bibi Umm-e-Farwa a.s. Hazrat Qasim a.s. in the Battlefield On the day of Ashura, when Aun a.s and Mohammed a.s had fallen in the battlefield, Qasim a.s came to Imam Hussain a.s. and begged for permission to go and fight. Twice Imam Hussain a.s. refused saying Qasim a.s. you are young and your mothers only son., which disappointed Qasim a.s. very much. Then Qasim a.s. went to his mother, who at this sight remembered that just before her husband Imam Hasan a.s. had died, he had written a letter, giving it to Bibi Umm Farwa a.s. saying, “If ever you find Qasim a.s. in difficulty then give him this letter. She gave Qasim a.s. the letter, which said: My son Qasim a.s, a day will come when my brother Hussain a.s will be facing an enemy army of tens of thousands. That will be the day when Islam will need to be saved by sacrifice. You must represent me on that day. Having read the letter, Qasim a.s. rushed to Imam Hussain a.s and gave him the letter and Imam Hussain a.s replied, O my brothers son, how can I stop you from doing what your father wanted you to do? Imam Hussain a.s. tied Hasans a.s turban on the head of Qasim a.s and helped him mount his horse. Qasim a.s said, O my uncle, please do not be upset. I don’t fear death. Death for Islam will be sweeter for me than honey. When Qasim a.s came to the battle field, the enemy remarked How can we kill someone whose face is shining like moon?, as Qasim a.s was a very handsome boy. In a loud and a clear voice Qasim a.s introduced himself and cried out a challenge for single combat. He killed several famous warriors who came forward. Every time he killed an enemy, Qasim a.s would stand on his stirrups, look behind and wave to Abbas, just as a pupil would seek approval of his teacher on an assignment, and Hazrat Abbas a.s would proudly wave back. When the enemy saw his bravery and realized that they could not possibly over power him in single combats, they came from behind and Umar ibn Nafyl al-Azdi hit Qasim a.s on the head with a sword. Qasim a.s tried to go on fighting but since he was so young and very thirsty, he could not carry on fighting. After a while he fell from his horse crying out to Hussain a.s., O uncle, Accept My Last Salam. Imam Hussain a.s and Hazrat Abbas a.s rode out. The soldiers tried to stop them, when finally they came to where Qasim a.s had fallen they saw a dreadful sight. Qasims a.s. body had been trampled by the horses of the soldiers who had tried to stop Imam Hussain a.s and Hazrat Abbas a.s.
