Grant, with his wife, Julia, embarked on a world tour that would last for two years. He returned to the United States at San Francisco in 1879, and on Sept. 30, set out to visit Yosemite. On his way back from the Yosemite Valley, he reached Merced at 7 o’clock on the evening of Oct. 6. Thus Grant, the famed Civil War general, became the first president to visit Merced.
