Why Are Jews So Powerful? by Farrukh Saleem [Farrukh Saleem is a Pakistani freelance columnist based in Islamabad.] There are only 14 million Jews in the world -- 7 million in the Americas , 5 million in Asia, 2 million in Europe and 100,000 in Africa. For every Jew in the world there are 100 Muslims. Yet, Jews are 100 times more powerful than all the Muslims put together. I have often wondered why? Jesus of Nazareth was Jewish; Albert Einstein, the most influential scientist of all time and TIME magazines Person of the Century, was a Jew; Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis was a Jew; and so were Karl Marx, one of the worlds most famous Socialists; Paul Samuelson and Milton Friedman, the well-known economists. Jews whose discoveries and inventions have enriched humanity include: Benjamin Rubin, who gave the world the vaccinating needle; Jonas Salk, who developed the first polio vaccine; Albert Sabin, who developed the improved live polio vaccine; Gertrude Elion, who gave us a leukemia fighting drug; Baruch Blumberg, who developed the vaccination for Hepatitis B; Paul Ehrlich, who discovered a treatment for syphilis; Elie Metchnikoff, who won a Nobel Prize for his research in infectious diseases; Bernard Katz, who won a Nobel Prize for his findings about neuromuscular transmission; Andrew Schally, who won a Nobel Prize in endocrinology; Aaron Beck, who founded cognitive therapy; Gregory Pincus, who developed the first oral contraceptive pill; George Wald, who won a Nobel Prize for giving us our understanding of the human eye; Stanley Cohen, who won a Nobel Prize in embryology; Willem Kolff, who came up with the kidney dialysis machine. Over the past 105 years, there have been 14 million Jews and 180 of them have been awarded the Nobel Prize compared to 1.4 billion Muslims who have won only 3 Nobel Prizes. Why are Jews so powerful? In addition to those mentioned above, Jews have dominated the world of technology: Stanley Mezor invented the first micro-processing chip; Leo Szilard developed the first nuclear chain reactor; Peter Schultz, optical fibre cable; Charles Adler, traffic lights; Benno Strauss, stainless steel; Isador Kisee, sound movies; Emile Berliner, telephone microphone; Charles Ginsburg, videotape recorder. In the business world : Ralph Lauren (Polo); Levi Strauss (Levis Jeans); Howard Schultz (Starbucks); Sergey Brin (Google); Michael Dell (Dell Computers); Larry Ellison (Oracle); Donna Karan (DKNY); Irv Robbins (Baskins & Robbins); and Bill Rosenberg (Dunkin Donuts). In administration and government: Richard Levin, President of Yale University; Henry Kissinger (U. S. Secretary of State under Richard Nixon); Alan Greenspan (Federal Reserve chairman under Reagan, GHBush, Clinton and GWBush); Joseph Lieberman (US Senator); Madeleine Albright (U.S. Secretary of State under Bill Clinton); Casper Weinberger (Secretary of Defense under Bill Clinton); Maxim Litvinov ( USSR foreign Minister); David Marshal ( Singapore s first chief minister); Issac Isaacs (Governor-general of Australia ); BenjaminDisraeli (British statesman and author); Yevgeny Primakov (Russian Prime Minister); Barry Goldwater (US Senator); Jorge Sampaio (President of Portugal ); John Deutsch (CIA director); Herbert Gray (Canadian Deputy Prime Minister); Pierre Mendes (French Prime Minister); Michael Howard (British Home Secretary); Bruno Kreisky (Chancellor of Austria ); and Robert Rubin (U.S. Secretary of Treasury). In news media and telecommunications: Wolf Blitzer (CNN); Barbara Walters (ABC News); Eugene Meyer (The Washington Post columnist); Henry Grunwald(Editor-in-Chief of Time); Katherine Graham (publisher of The Washington Post); Joseph Lelyveld (Executive editor, The New York Times); and Max Frankel (The New York Times). In philanthropy: George Soros, who has so far donated $4 billion as aid to scientists and universities around the world, is the worlds top philanthropist; Walter Annenberg, who has given $2 billion to build 100 hundred libraries, is the 2nd top philanthropist in the world. In sports: Mark Spitz who set a record by winning 7 Olympic gold medals in swimming; Lenny Krayzelburg, a three-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming; Boris Becker, the tennis champion. In the film and movie industry, the Hollywoods famous Jewish actors and actresses include: Harrison Ford; George Burns; Tony Curtis; Charles Bronson; Sandra Bullock; Billy Crystal; Woody Allen; Paul Newman; Peter Sellers; Dustin Hoffman; Michael Douglas; Kirk Douglas; Ben Kingsley; Goldie Hawn; Cary Grant; William Shatner; Jerry Lewis; and Peter Falk. In fact, Hollywood itself was founded by Jews. And in addition, among the movie and television industrys most famous directors, producers and screenwriters are Jews, such as: Steven Spielberg; Mel Brooks; Oliver Stone; Aaron Spelling (Beverly Hills 90210); Neil Simon (The Odd Couple); Andrew Vaina (Rambo I, Rambo II, Rambo III); Michael Man (Starsky and Hutch); Milos Forman (One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest); Douglas Fairbanks (The Thief of Baghdad ); and Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters). So, why are Jews so powerful? One major reason is: Jews put a big value on proper education and training. In contrast, there are an estimated 1,476,233,470 Muslims on the planet: one billion in Asia, 400 million in Africa, 44 million in Europe and six million in the Americas. Every fifth person in the world is a Muslim; for every Hindu there are two Muslims; for every Buddhist there are two Muslims; and for every Jew there are one hundred Muslims. However, in comparison to the Jews, why are Muslims so powerless? Consider the following: there are 57 Muslim countries in the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), and all of them put together have around 500 universities, that is, one university for every three million Muslims. In comparison, among the non-Muslims/Jews, the United States of America has 5,758 universities and India has 8,407. In 2004, Shanghais Jiao Tong University compiled an academic ranking of world universities, and intriguingly, not one university from Muslim states was in the top 500. Per data collected by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), literacy in the non-Muslim world stands at nearly 90 per cent, and 15 non-Muslim majority states have a literacy rate of 100 per cent. The Muslim-majority state, in sharp contrast, has an average literacy rate of around 40 per cent and there is no Muslim-majority state with a literacy rate of 100 per cent. Some 98 per cent of the literates in the non-Muslim/Jewish world had completed primary school compared to less than 50 per cent of the literates in the Muslim world. Around 40 per cent of the literates in the non-Muslim/Jewish world go on to attend a university compared to no more than two per cent of the literates in the Muslim world. Muslim-majority countries have 230 scientists per one million Muslims. In comparison, in the non-Muslim/Jewish world, the USA has 4,000 scientists per million and Japan has 5,000 per million. In the entire world, the total number of full-time researchers is 35,000, and while the Christian world has up to 1,000 technicians per one million, there are only 50 technicians per one million in the Muslim world. Furthermore, the Muslim world spends 0.2 per cent of its GDP on research and development, while the Jews world spends at least 5 per cent. Conclusion #1: The Muslim world lacks the capacity and is therefore failing to produce knowledge. Daily newspapers per 1,000 people and number of book titles per million are two indicators of whether knowledge is being diffused in a society. In Pakistan, there are 23 daily newspapers per 1,000 Pakistanis while the same ratio in Singapore is 360. In the United Kingdom , the number of book titles per million stands at 2,000 while Egypt has 20 only. Conclusion #2: The Muslim world is failing to diffuse knowledge. Exports of high technology products as a percentage of total exports are an important indicator of knowledge application. Pakistans export of high technology products stands at 1 per cent; Saudi Arabias is 0.3 per cent; Kuwait, Morocco, and Algeria are 0.3 per cent each, while Singapore is 58 per cent. Conclusion #3: The Muslim world is failing to apply knowledge. So, the question is: why are Muslims powerless compared to Jews? It is because we in the Muslim world are not properly: producing knowledge; diffusing knowledge; and applying knowledge. The future belongs to knowledge-based societies. Interestingly, the combined annual GDP of the 57 countries in the OIC is under $2 trillion. Compare that to the United States of Americas GDP (which is the basis for a nations purchasing power) of $12 trillion; Chinas of $8 trillion; Japans of $3.8 trillion; and Germanys $2.4 trillion. Oil rich Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, and Qatar collectively produce goods and services worth $500 billion from oil; Spain alone produces goods and services worth over $1 trillion; Poland $489 billion, and Thailand $545 billion. In comparison, the Muslim worlds GDP is also fast declining. So, why are Muslims so powerless compared to Jews? The low value placed on education by Muslims which result in lack of proper education and training. What we in the Muslim world do best is to shout to Allah the whole day and blame everyone else for our failures. OBAMA the only MUSLIM got Nobel Price for doing NOTHING! Like
