Why Did Jesus Have to be Born and Die as a Man? John 15:21-22 … “For since by man came death, by man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.” Galatians 4:4-5 … “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law that we might receive the adoption as sons.” God created the universe and everything in it. His power is unlimited and beyond question. So why did God have to kill Jesus, his own son, to save us from our sins? We might ask ourselves that question when we are feeling guilty because we feel ashamed that our sins required Jesus to die instead of us. When Adam and Eve sinned, God killed (shed the blood) of one of his own created animals (probably the very first death) to get skins to make clothes for Adam and Eve. From that point until Christ arrived, God required man to regularly shed the blood of animals to pay for sin. However, animal sacrifice only addressed past sins. For the sins man committed after that, more animals had to be sacrificed as a continuing practice; once was not enough. John 15 tells us that since death came because of man’s sin, it was necessary that life and salvation also come through man. The only man pure enough to serve as the supreme sacrifice for all of our sins – past, present, and future – was God’s son Jesus, who was born of a woman and lived as a man until his crucifixion. There is another reason Jesus was born and lived as a man. Had Jesus arrived in a cloud as a full-grown man waving a golden scepter and declaring that all sin is forgiven, you never would have believed that such a powerful and majestic God could also be your best friend. In coming — touching and talking to people, eating, praying, and teaching — he demonstrated the intimate relationship you can have with him today. God invites you to be his friend. He demonstrated how that is possible by becoming a man himself. His blood saves you, his friendship sustains you, his promises give you hope, his heavenly home is ready for you, and his presence in your life is eternal.
