Why Do I Fear Failure? What Am I Scared Of? Why do I fear failure? Hm, that’s a good question. . . Are you reluctant to try new things or do you procrastinate your way out of situations that lack a high percentage success rate? How about low self-esteem? Do you lack any confidence? Maybe you are such a perfectionist that you only do the things within your current abilities because you’ve done it hundreds if not thousands of times. Do not worry, you are definitely not alone. Henry Ford went broke and had failed five times before he succeeded. Abraham Lincoln failed in 8 elections before becoming President. Walt Disney went bankrupt several times before hitting it big with Disney World. Albert Einstein was not able to talk until the age of 4 and was unable to speak until he was 7. All the names above are mentions of great people who will always be remembered for their time and service here on Earth. They had failed countless times and had gone on to lose all their money but they always came back 10 times stronger. That’s what it’s about right? But why do you fear failure? That’s a great question. We here have the 5 main reasons why us human beings have a fear of failure & what you can do about it! 1 | Failing leads to unpleasant emotions No one denies that failing is one of the worst emotions a person can feel. As a young teenager or kid you might have had bad experiences failing in life which has slowly caused your brain to reprogram the way it brain perceives failure. We need to turn that around by reprogramming your brain back to the way it was before. I encourage you to fail at something. Fail as if you enjoy it for a change, and start getting used to the feelings associated with failure. Let your brain know that it’s okay to fail because it’s a vital step in your journey through life. 2 | Disappointment from friends & family You are scared to let your friends and family know that you’ve failed. You believe they will get the impression that you are not successful and have become a lesser human being than before. That is NOT true. It is how you deal with the failure that will determine whether or not your friends and family will show disappointment. If you whine, cry and give up they will be disappointed. However, if you stand back up and announce your efforts to try again despite the failure, they will see a proud person in front of them who has what it takes to achieve success. 3 | Fear of the unknown We never truly know what will happen to us when we fail. We only expect the worst case scenarios possible. But have you ever thought of the scenario where you simply stand up and try again? Life is an experiment and that’s all it ever is. The more experiments we do the better off we are. The more unknowns we discover, the less things become a surprise. If you fear the unknown, venture into it and realize that it isn’t what people hype it up to be. Fear is just an illusion. 4 | Fear of being disproved by your peers Do the people around you discourage you from doing something? To that I say, “Who cares!” Think about it for a second… life is bigger than the town, city, or country that you live in. At any given time you can make the decision to move countries and have a whole new life with new people and experiences. If you want to get rid of your fear of disapproval, you must force yourself to be within in the eyes of the public and do something that makes you uncomfortable. Get used to that feeling but concentrate only on yourself. Nothing else matters. 5 | Low self-esteem and confidence in yourself Many times the reason for one’s inaction is their fear of action. Lack of self-esteem and self-confidence will do that to you. In this case, you may not necessary fear failure but more so the idea that you simply can’t do it because you lack the believe in yourself. If you can’t do something then work towards doing it in the future. Often times people think about the whole rather than the parts. They’d say, “How can I do 50 push-ups when I can barely do 5?” . . . That’s why you should break it down into pieces and set goals for yourself to meet specific deadlines. Assess your strategy on how you’ll get there and execute it. There you have it. The next time you ask yourself, “Why do I fear failure?”, you should change it into “Why should I fear failure?” There’s no reason to be scared of something which does not exist. It only lives in our own thinking and is therefore not real! Do not forget that. Source: youmotivation
