Why Fasting is Prescribed excerpted from The Sermons by Shay kh Z u l f i q ar Ah m a d It is obvious that Muslims must always strive for the second type of fasting and be in a comple te state of fasting. Hunger and Thirst Fasting serves to b u ild righ t eo usness and ele v ates th e righteous even higher. Conseque ntly, those who obey Allah u and abstain from sin during the i r fasts do n o t fee l th e intensity of hunger and thirst during the day as do those who unfortunately fail to stay away fro m sin. Abstaining fro m Backbiting Throughout the Prophet’s a life t ime, Allah u presente d circumstance s and examples to serve as lessons for the Muslims to f o llow. Two women were fasting and ca me near to death because of sheer hunger. This problem was presented before the Messenger a of Allah who advised that the women should rinse their mouth, whic h they did. Thereafte r, the women vomited sma ll pieces of meat. These w o men we re a s tonished because they had not eaten an ything because they were fasting. The Messenger a of Allah revealed that the women had been guilty of backbiting during their fast, a sin synonymous with eating dead flesh. Allah u preserved th is incident in time so tha t future gen erations ma y learn a lesson from it.
