Why I Run By: Dave Andelman – CEO & Founder, Phantom - TopicsExpress

Why I Run By: Dave Andelman – CEO & Founder, Phantom Gourmet I was born about a mile from the Boston Marathon finish line and I own a home about a mile away. When the bombs went off last year I was inside Forum, one of the venues that suffered the most damage. The next day, determined not to let terrorism change my routine, I got my haircut in the North End then stopped at a bar called Durty Nelly’s even though it was only 10:30am. Some guys recognized me and asked why I was drinking beers so early and I said, “I was there yesterday.” Seeing their faces, the enormity of the situation hit me. I went home, slept and woke up to a text message from a close friend informing me that two women I knew from Summer Shack were victims…one lost her life, another lost her leg. I went for my regular run around the Charles River, looked at the Back Bay from Cambridge, got tears in my eyes and knew I had 364 days to get ready. I decided to run for a great local charity called The Greg Hill Foundation that responds to the immediate needs of families that had been touched by tragedy. I’m trying to get to $15,000 in donations and every one that comes in pumps me up. Training in the cold and snow and ice has been tough, even dangerous, but I’m on a mission to show monsters who commit atrocities like the Marathon bombs that their savage actions will never deter the American way of life. I’m not an elite athlete or a gifted distance runner but I trained hard, enduring brutal workouts, because it’s not enough for me to just finish… I want to run “Boston Strong.” For all the people I love, my friends,Phantom Gourmet “phans,” the people watching here and all over the world, I’ll put my mind, body and soul into running the best Boston Marathon I can. Yell loud when you see me, it shoots energy into my veins, because… This is our damn city.
