Why I didnt make Chief. I retired as probably one of the most senior First class AO in the Navy. I should have made Chief but due to my own stupidity I didnt. I worked hard , earned three Navy Achievement medals etc.but I liked to play hard to. I liked to gamble and learned you dont get into big games with Cdrs and Lcdrs and other that out rank you they get upset when you take their money. I was put on report by the Captain of a carrier because of an incident that got a guy permanently disabled because of a Lcdrs mistake that was trickled down to me. I told the Lcdr if I went to mast I would spill my guts so that got smoothed over. Also I had a penchant for speaking my mind. I spent 17 out of twenty three years on sea duty made first class in 66 retired in 82. Missed ships movement twice while in West pac. I served on seven carriers two ships company the others with squadrons. I regret not making Chief but I guess I was lucky to hold onto first class but because of my work ethic I was just given a slap on the wrist. When I missed ship.s movement in HongKong they flew me out to the ship and my squadron CO just grinned and told me to get back to work. I feel I had a very colorful career if I could go back I would do some things differently and probably make Chief I feel that is the pinnacle of a Navy career.
