Why Practice? Mind-body awareness is an essential component of the Bodhi Meditation approach: according to meditative tradition, the mind has the ability to broaden and to heal, correcting physical and mental illness. Flowing water doesn’t corrupt. Pure water doesn’t corrupt. The same applies to human beings. Firstly, we need to move, to do physical exercises. The lifestyle of a “couch potato” doesn’t work for our bodies. Secondly, we need calmness. And the best way to attain calmness is through meditation. Let me give you an example. Let’s say we scoop some water from a natural river and pour it into a big transparent bucket. Then we observe the water: It’s a mixture of sand, mud, pieces of plants and leaves. We leave it there for a while and then notice some stuff starts to move and sink. Heavy stuff sinks slowly to the bottom; light stuff like plant pieces rises to the surface. The water in the middle turns clear. We know that the fewer impurities in the water, the clearer it looks. Meditation has the same effect on our body and mind. Thirdly, if we want to be completely healthy, we need to enter a state of mind where we have a profound understanding of everything. Meditation helps us achieve this. It’s a necessary tool for us to get to know who we are and to profoundly understand the outside world.
