Why Teachers With the NYPD Shirts Were Blindsided by the Negative Reaction to their Gesture: The deepest sense of injury in New York, and around the nation, is not among police officers, it is people in the Black community who have seen one after another unarmed Black man die at the hands of law enforcement in questionable circumstances. If you as a teacher are not sensitive to the depth of outrage, despair and concern among your Black colleagues, your Black students and their parents and family members, then your eyes, ears and hearts are closed to what is happening around you. And you will do something which is going to offend people you should be trying to comfort and support. I dont think those teachers who came to school with the NYPD shirts had the slightest idea what kind of response their actions would inspire, which shows what a segregated society we live in. If they had black friends and neighbors and family members, they would have known what to expect. They misread the racial climate in the city and the nation.
