Why Wednesday! By: Chief Kevin Wall While reflecting on Why I am in the Florida Air National Guard and Why I wear this uniform I had the idea to visit my mother at her assisted living home, in uniform as a newly pinned Chief Master Sgt. The idea was planted in my head after witnessing Brig. Gen. Eifert visit an assisted living facility in Daytona Beach with the Governor--simply to say Thanks to the veterans there. I thought that was the greatest thing anyone in uniform could do for our veterans, to show we haven’t forgotten them. Upon seeing my mother, I had forgotten the joy in her eyes when she first saw me in that Air Force dress blue uniform, she hadn’t smiled like that since she has been at her new living facility and that day she did! She asked me if everyone had seen me and of course it was hard not to being in dress blues in a retirement home. At that moment I realized there is not enough money in the world that could replace the pride I saw in her eyes; reassuring Why I serve. Sometimes there is enough Why in seeing the pride that your parents have when they first see you in uniform and in my case the first time my mother saw me as a Chief! Beyond proud parents, we have a proud nation and have been entrusted with carrying out the protection of this great country and to represent the “best of the best”. Regardless of the uniform you wear, or the rank you have earned; remember when you are in a U.S. military uniform you represent all who have, all who are and all who will serve in the greatest military in the world!
