Why You Need to Charge Your Cell Phone Before Going Through Airport Security By ASHLEIGH SCHMITZ New U.S. intelligence is causing international airports to crack down at security checkpoints. After learning of new ways to detect possible bombs, Homeland Security officials “felt it important to crank up” security abroad. On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson released a statement saying, ”I have directed TSA to implement enhanced security measures in the coming days at certain overseas airports with direct flights to the United States. We will work to ensure these necessary steps pose as few disruptions to travelers as possible.” A few days later, a statement from the Transportation Security Administration detailed some of the new security measures: “during the security examination, officers may also ask that owners power up some devices, including cell phones. Powerless devices will not be permitted onboard the aircraft.” These heightened security measures implemented at certain international airports with direct flights to the U.S. are presumed to be a response to recent intelligence that suggests that Al Qaeda-linked terrorists in Syria are collaborating with members of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and are focused on commercial aviation attacks in the U.S. or Europe.
