Why You Should Wash Your Bananas If fruit flies are invading your kitchen, a few simple tricks can help get rid of them and make sure you are not bringing more into the house. To avoid fruit flies when you bring home bananas, rinse the fruit in tap water and dry it with a paper towel—this is to remove fruit fly eggs. Fruit fly eggs often are on the banana skins when you buy them, and the flies hatch in the warmth of your kitchen. If you already have fruit flies: Fill a large bowl or cake pan halfway with water, add one tablespoon of sugar, stir to dissolve, then add a few drops of liquid dish soap. The flies will be attracted to the sugary water and drown—the soap prevents them from flying away. Source: “Ask Heloise” column, published in Good Housekeeping
