Why are gills important to fishes? Koi takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide through their gills. With the presence of chlorine in our tap water, gills can be easily damaged during filter maintenance/ water change. Can the koi survive with damaged gills? In most cases, yes....but how long? Accidents will begin to happen - one fine day - when you start to perform your regular filter maintenance/ water change unaware that their gills are already badly damaged. Fishes cant talk - Be A Responsible Pet Owner.
