Why are so many people doing the ice water bucket challenge for ALS? While many of you have done this challenge, do you know what this disease is? ...or have you taken time to look it up? ...or have you just done it for fun? ...to be a part of something bigger? IF I asked you, What is ALS, could you tell me? I couldnt remember from nursing school exactly what ALS is when asked yesterday!!! Just calling myself out, thats all... So, here is a brief summary of what it is. Really, I would like everyone to look it up on Google, but more of you will not do this than will, so here it is for you. Take in mind that there are only about 30,000 cases, so it does not pay for the pharmaceutical companies to find a drug for this by doing research. May you all be blessed today! Muah!! What is ALS? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death, usually within 5 years. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
