Why are we living with a 18th century political system that assumes that a representative from our gerrymandered district represents our views in any meaningful way? Why arent we advocating for 21st century democracy? ==== Heres what Id like to to do: On anything involving electronic liberty, I proxy my vote to the EFF (https://eff.org/). On anything involving civil liberties, I proxy my vote to the ACLU (https://aclu.org/). On anything involving transit issues in New York City, I proxy my vote to Transportation Alternatives (transalt.org/). On anything involving educational issues, I proxy my vote to Diane Ravitch (dianeravitch.net/). On anything that involves increased spending, I proxy my vote to the National Taxpayers Union (ntu.org/). On anything that involves the active use of American military force, by default vote no. On all other issues, vote no by default, but email me for confirmation. If there is any contradiction between these instructions, email me for confirmation. I retain the right to change my default configuration at any time. === Now.... I could design this app, and implement it pretty easily, likely with a fairly small team. Ensuring its security would be a little harder, but not by much. And of course, -your- choices of which representatives to trust would likely be different from mine, and so they should be: You should choose people, or organizations, that will faithfully represent your own inclinations. But.... isnt this obvious? Why is no one talking about this? Why do we assume that we have to live with a political form created in the 18th century? Does your congressman really represent you? Lets make something better. Kill Congress. Let the people decide, and give them the tools to do so, by assigning their votes to the organizations or the people they trust.
