Why did the Public Health Authority of the Ministry of Health - TopicsExpress

Why did the Public Health Authority of the Ministry of Health allow the filmmakers from Nigeria to enter in Seychelles? TODAY in Seychelles issue of today Monday 11 August, 2014, reported that the Nigerian film director, Kunle Afolayan, his brother Gabriel Afolayan and his film crew were allowed to enter in Seychelles last Saturday, 9th August, 2014. Mr. Kunle Afolayan is said to reside in the Nigerian densely populated capital, Lagos, where, as of Friday 8th August, 2014, most of the 13 cases of the deadly Ebola disease in Nigeria have been reported by WHO including two people who have already died of the disease. On Friday 8th August, 2014, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a national state of emergency in the country and approved USD 11.7 million to control the spread of the deadly virus. On Friday 8th August, 2014, the Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan, gave a press briefing to the international media from WHO Headquarters , Geneva and WHO Emergency Committee issued the following: • The Ebola outbreak in West Africa constitutes an ‘extraordinary event’ and a public health risk to other states; • The possible consequences of further international spread are particularly serious in view of the virulence of the virus, the intensive community and health facility transmission patterns, and the weak health systems in the currently affected and most at-risk countries. • A coordinated international response is deemed essential to stop and reverse the international spread of Ebola. According to the above newspaper report, Mr. Afolayan and his brother were separated from the other Kenya film crew and “were made to sign plenty of forms because they came from West Africa. Despite his brother not being able to produce a yellow-fever card, the pair were allowed to enter the country by the looks of it.” Is this not yet another case of gross incompetence of our Public Health Authority to protect our population from the risk of contracting the deadly Ebola disease? Our small population and visitors to our country, especially now during our peak tourist season, demand more efficient and competent service from our Ministry of Health against the risk of contracting this deadly disease now.
