Why did the Torah write that Paroh dreamed in present tense - TopicsExpress

Why did the Torah write that Paroh dreamed in present tense instead of past tense? The answer can be found with a Midrash. The Midrash says that once the decree of how long Yosef should be in prison was finished, that was when Paroh dreamt his dream. The Torah wrote that Paroh was dreaming in present tense to teach us that once the years were up, now Paroh dreamt his dream. - Kol Simcha When a person recognizes someone else, its normal that the other person eventually recognizes the first person. Yosef recognized his brothers, however, they didnt recognize him. The reason for this is because they saw him on a very high level and they pushed away such thoughts that it might be Yosef (they decided that Yosef cannot be on a high level). - Ohr HaChaim The reason why Yosef accused the brothers of being spies is because Yosef was nervous that the brothers would spread out throughout Egypt looking for him. They would ask around and perhaps they would find out the entire story and reveal his identity. Therefore, Yosef accused them of spying to prevent them from asking around about him. - Kli Yakar Chazal (our Sages) say that Yosef lost ten years of his life as a punishment for having his father referred to as a slave and he did not say anything. However, if we omit the amount of times that Yaakov was referred to as his slave, its only five times! The explanation to this Chazal is that there was a translator who repeated everything to Yosef. It comes out that he heard it ten times. - Gra A person has to be very careful with his words. Yakov accidentally cursed Rachel and she died as a result. When the brothers went down to Egypt he blessed them. Yakov could have cursed the ruler that was causing so many problems for him and his curse would have killed him. If Yakov would have done so he would have killed his own son. - Chafetz Chaim
