Why do modern instrumentalists apply generous amounts of vibrato - TopicsExpress

Why do modern instrumentalists apply generous amounts of vibrato to music from the Romantic period? During the Romantic period, vibrato was most likely rarely used in ensembles, and only used minimally in soloistic pieces as an expressive device. The notion that vibrato was used extensively in 19th century playing (and early 20th century) is currently being challenged by conductors like Sir Roger Norrington and other period instrument specialists. Is it perhaps because the matter is still debatable that todays players have decided to not adapt yet or is it because of a general tendency to dislike challenges to tradition? For reference, here is an early recording featuring the type of style commonly used during the period (played by Joseph Joachim, a close friend and colleague of Brahms): https://youtube/watch?v=hF6XfABTsQE
