Why do we need research to treat animals with kindness? What happened to our common sense ? Dogs are People, Too... A recent article in the New York Times reported on a study of brain function done on dogs. The dogs were trained to go in a MRI scanner without being sedated. (Brain function cannot be studied by MRI in dogs that are anesthetized.) The study found that the canine brain processes information the same as the human brain. As the study concludes, we now know what dogs are thinking and feeling. As the article states, dogs may be entitled to personhood and the rights that go with that status. It seems to me, the important question is whether dogs are uniquely similar to humans or whether other species also have brain function that is the same as humans. If other animals can be trained to go in a MRI scanner without sedation, we may soon know the answer. The implications are profound.
