Why do we not need to keep the Sabbath as believers? Basically for the same reasons we do not keep the law of Moses --we are under the new covenant- the law of Christ. It says the law came through Moses and grace and truth through Jesus Christ. John is showing the difference between the two covenants First- The Sabbath was given to Israel not the world and it was done as a sealing of the covenant of law. Exodus 31:16-17 “ Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.” Clearly the Bibles meaning of the children of Israel is the nation of Jews who were released from bondage in Egypt. Gentiles were not called Jews, or Israel unless they converted.
