“Why do you pine away with vain grief? Why do you suffer yourself to be tired with superfluous cares? Be resigned to my good pleasure and you will suffer no loss. If you seek this or that advantage, or want to be in thus place or that, for the sake of your own interest, or of your own satisfaction, you will never be at rest, nor free from solicitude; because in everything you will find some defect, and in every place you will find someone who will trouble you. Therefore, the acquiring or multiplying of external goods will avail you nothing; but rather despising of them and the care of uprooting them from your heart will be of use. This I would not have you understand only in regard to money and riches, but also in regard to the ambition for honor and the desire for empty praise; all things which pass away with the world. The place avails little, if the spirit of fervor be wanting. Neither shall peace last long which is procured from outside if the state of your heart is lacking the true foundation, that is, if you establish yourself in me. You can change your dwelling, but you will not better yourself. For, when the occasion presents itself and you will accept it, you will find that which you ran away from and even worse.”
