Why do you serve National Service? Why do we not reduce NS - TopicsExpress

Why do you serve National Service? Why do we not reduce NS duration further? Why does Singapore spend 4-6% of GDP on defence? Heres a reason why... On 11 September 2013, referring to the Syrian crisis, Russian President Vladimir Putin said: We need to use the United Nations Security Council and believe that preserving law and order in today’s complex and turbulent world is one of the few ways to keep international relations from sliding into chaos. The law is still the law, and we must follow it whether we like it or not. Today the same Russian President, Vladimir Putin, takes Crimea from Ukraine despite U.N. opposition, and is alleged to continue driving instability in Eastern Ukraine. Oh, by the way, did you know that Ukraine once possessed the third-largest nuclear arsenal in the world? It was larger than those of Britain, China, and France combined. Post-Cold War, in 1994, Ukraine agreed to dismantle its post-Soviet nuclear arsenal; in return, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum of Security Assurances to respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine and reaffirm their obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine. Despite that assurance, look at what Russia has done and what Ukraine is experiencing... International Law can easily be broken by those who wish it broken for their benefit. Yes, the region is largely peaceful and International Law is Singapores first line of defence. When diplomacy fails, however, YOU are Singapores last line of defence: National Serviceman and Operationally Ready National Serviceman contribute to the competent SAF that deters would-be powers who may think of one day breaking those international laws. Do you still think that Singapore should reduce or abolish National Service?
