Why does truth matter?Imagine chatting with the Apostle Paul over a good cup of coffee: “Paul, what drives you to try to reach everyone with the gospel?” He might say: “Because God, our Savior, wants every person on earth to be saved and to come to know the truth. There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (see 1 Timothy 2:3-5). Is truth really that basic? The answer to that question is bedrock. If you get this, all the rest will follow. There aren’t multiple gods, but one. And there’s only one way to God. John recorded Jesus saying: “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” In essence, Paul and John are telling us the same thing: truth is not a set of beliefs. Truth is a Person. Here are three reasons we must contend for the truth: • Truth brings freedom. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Consider how repressive regimes must survive by distortions and lies.• Truth is our surest safeguard against deception. Jesus cautioned, “Take heed that no one deceives you”…noting even the elect would be deceived (see Matthew 24:4, 24).• Truth is God’s gift to us. “When He, the (Holy) Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). Truth is essential to the Spirit-led life. Are you a high school student? You know lying and cheating are an art form. Are you in college? You know the very idea that truth can be known objectively is scoffed at. Are you in business? You know truth is too often traded for expediency and financial gain. Truth matters. As a believer, you can declare you are not for sale, and truth is not for sale. In fact, truth could even be worth dying for! KEY VERSE: “Buy the truth and do not sell it” (Proverbs 23:23).
