Why dogs dig and how to control it Digging is a normal behaviour in dog although some breeds, like terriers, are more prone to digging due to their nature. It is important to understand why your dog is digging before you try and control it. Dogs will dig for many reasons and I am going to discuss just a few with you. Dogs will dig for shelter and to try and keep cool, and you will usually find these holes in the shade or under bushes. If this is the case then you may need to look into improving their shelter. Dogs will dig for entertainment or due to boredom and the holes will be located randomly throughout the garden. To stop this digging you will need to entertain your dog more through exercise. Dogs will dig for attention and they will usually do this right in front of you. Dogs will dig to escape or gain access to something and you will see these holes on the side of fences or walls. So ensure your garden is safe and appealing to them. If the digging persists, you may need to allocate an area in your garden for them to dig and reward them every time they dig in the correct area.
