Why is the United States the only developed country without laws providing paid maternity leave? In fact, why are we one of the only countries without any paid maternity leave? This hits so close to home as my maternity leave is dwindling down and the very real struggles of finances are becoming apparent because we are a two income home. I was hoping to be able to take a full leave, sadly I know for my families sake I will not be able to. So I too will pass over a very new baby and miss so many firsts and critical bonding moments with her which will in no way help my post partum depression. Some mothers are lucky to work for a company that offers paid leave but since it is not mandated many companies dont feel its necessary to pay anything unless the mother had saved vacation time or sick pay and that hardly happens because those hours are used for the many doctors appointments you go through during a pregnancy.
