Why kids fail 1. Parents love matches and tournaments and will - TopicsExpress

Why kids fail 1. Parents love matches and tournaments and will spend even $1,000s of tournaments and travel for weekends that provide as little as 13 minutes of wrestling for their $500 price tag. HS coaches will to on the super fun dual meet camps. 2. Not training year round. I like the once a week year round model. This is why we structured PWA this way 15 years ago. Works like a charm. The more serious kids go 2x a week and maybe 3x during season But once a week is key. 3. Low skill level- they try to learn random moves and 100s of them in fact. 90% of your points comes from 10% if the wrestling. Focus only on that until your son is top 20 or so in the nation in high school. Then learn the counter to a counter to a counter to a counter to a Russian 2 on 1. 4. Camps- go to the camps that provide #3. Meat market camps and camps with 750 kids strewn across an indoor football complex are stupid. Just stupid. _ There are some great camps out there and not just ours. Find one. Avoid the stupid ones. 5. Be realistic. If your son isnt a DYNAMO give him time. Once kids get hair on their legs IT ALL LEVELS OUT FAST. Until then be encouraging and get him SKILLED and DRILLED so he has years and 10s of 1000s of reps on the CORE SYSTEM. You must have a foundation in place. Focus in having close matches. If my son never places in the pee wee natl events but can drill like a machine and has close matches vs top kids I am happy. Once the maturity kicks in we win. Plus the 6 minute match time and 40 foot mat help a ton vs the pee wee matches. 6. HS kids - you can make up time fast! Older kids learn faster that is a fact. YES a 2nd year HS wrestler can catch and beat kids with 6-7 years of experience. Not too difficult either. CORE wrestling and a TON of live wrestling in practice is mandatory. 7. Focus on this - learn to stay steady and centered. Avoid panic in wrestling. - positioning - Id rather our guys win 1-0 than 13-12. Think about that one. Then do it. - hand fighting and motion - if you are not comfortable moving on the mat and or moving an opponent you can win. - technique is last - Core. And Foundation. Coaches - if youre team is not winning its time to fix it Good luck. Good luck! Nick
