Why religion can be wrong uniquely forever. Religion is unique. The things that make religion unique also make it uniquely capable of causing terrible harm, amongst other things. Why is religion especially troubling? What is so harmful? Religion is a belief in invisible beings, inaudible voices, intangible entities, undetectable forces and events and judgments that happen after we die. It therefore has no feedback, no reality check. There is no result to the experiment. It is therefore uniquely armored against criticism, questioning, and self-correction. It is uniquely armored against anything that might stop it spinning into extreme absurdity, extreme denial of reality and grotesque morality. Any other ideology, philosophy or hypothesis about the world will get found out if it is wrong. If a political belief is wrong, reality will show it doesn’t work. The way life plays out under that political belief will show the belief is wrong. People can only be told for so long of a political ideology that is wrong, because it will be seen not to work. Religion is different. The ‘proof’ comes from invisible beings and inaudible voices. It comes from feelings in people’s hearts, which confirm what they want to believe. The ‘proof’ comes in the afterlife after people die, when they cannot verify it. Every single claim made by religion comes from people, not from other sources in the world that can be verified, but from inside peoples’ heads. So if god’s rules and promises are not working out, followers still follow them. The ultimate judge and judgement are invisible. There is no proof or expectation that there should be any. There is no self-correction when religion gets things wrong.
