Why some people are more at risk of depression in response to stressful situations Submitted by Management June 29, 2011 news depression resilience social relations stress Researchers have shown that, although most people do not develop depression in case of significant adversity, such as the death of a loved one, a divorce or a dismissal, in about 30 % of people for first time and 60% of those with a history , depression develops after more minor misfortunes . A study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research , identifies factors that promote the development of a sensitivity to stressful life events and increases the risk of depression. George Slavich of the University of California at Los Angeles UCLA and colleagues conducted the study with 100 people with depression , 26 men and 74 women. People who had lost a parent or had been separated from a parent for at least one year before the age of 18 and those who lived more episodes of depression during their lives had become depressed following levels significantly lowest stress lately . Further observation of this analysis showed that it was the history of interpersonal loss that could result in a greater sensitivity to stressful interpersonal situations. One possibility , the researchers say , is that people who suffer adversity and / or depression early in life develop negative beliefs about themselves or the world - beliefs that are activated in response to subsequent stressful situations ( cognitive according to a conventional approach of depression ) . Another possibility, which is not mutually exclusive , is that early adversity and depression influence biological systems involved in depression , perhaps by lowering the threshold for processes such as inflammation trigger . Although many factors can influence susceptibility to stress , Slavich said , thoughts almost always play a role. For example, when your best friend does not return a call, do you think she is angry against you or she must have forgotten ? The thoughts affect how to react emotionally and biologically to situations , and these reactions greatly influence health. Regardless of previous experience, it is always important to step back and make sure to interpret situations impartially , on the basis of available information.
