Why this is important One of the founding principles of the European Union is the equality of languages and cultures. With 23 official languages, it is difficult to respect this principle. And today it is English that is favoured relative to other languages. For example, English is the only working language of the BCE. Europeans who do not speak English are disadvantaged relative to others. Choose Esperanto, a neutral language which is easy to learn, as the language of the EU, in order to create a level playing field for the European peoples. Furthermore, having the same language throughout Europe would permit a European debate in which all nations could understand each other and thereby create a more democratic Europe. In addition, according to the Grin Report, promoting the learning of Esperanto instead of English would save 25 billion Euros a year because Esperanto is 5 to 10 times easier to learn than other languages.
