Why to Celebrate Sri Thatha Desika Thirunakshathram? Baghavathas know it very well that, taking ultimate rescue at the Lotus Feet of an Aacharyan enlightens about our Beloved Lord. He speaks through our Aacharyans. Devotion at an Aacharya is a great blessing. Sri Thatha Desika was not only a scholar and an Acharya but also a great administrator and a very brave Leader of His times. He served as a Raja Guru of Vijayanagar Empire and also he was its Chief Minister. He is the main person who is responsible for driving away the forces of Foreign Invaders and Delhi Sultanate and safeguarded our Temples and Culture in the middle of highly confusing political scenario. If Sri Thatha Desika would not be there, then we all would not sit like this and sing in praise of our Lordships, for we would have yielded to the pressures of the external forces. He directed the rulers of Vijayanagar and gave them very strong doses of the needs to save and preserve our Culture for ages to come! He not only educated the millions on the value of our traditions, but actively involved in reviving, supervising and administering such conducts once they are re-established at Divya Desam Temples and other Kendras! It is with this gratitude we celebrate His birth centenary with utmost devotion. He was a great Ubhaya Vedantha Scholar and He was a master in performing ‘sacrificial fire rituals’ (Yagna Karyams). His foster father Sri Pancha Madha Banjana Thathachar had the title of ‘Satha-kruthu’ and both the father and son have performed more than 1000 yagnas all over the country of Bharath! The Army of Vijayanagar drove away all unrighteous influences out of the Deccan Plateau as per the directions of Sri Thatha Desika and then he once again re-established the worships and conducts of the temples as it should be. He was given the title ‘Sri Karya Thuranthara’ an award similar to the modern days ‘Manager General’ of Temples under the Vijayanagar Empire! Sri Thatha Desika being the lovable child of Sri Perundevi Thayar of Kanchipuram, did various contributions to preserve the Uthsava conducts, regular worships and Kalakshepams once the un-righteous people were driven away from such premises! Sri Thatha Desika has authored several granthas (books) in supplementing Sri Ramanujacharyas Vishishtadvaita and he was the first person to write a treatise to the Tamil works of Swamy Sri Vedantha Desikan as Sri Desika Prabandha Eedu! Though Swamy Srimadh Desikar’s 80000 padi Vyakyanam known as ‘Sri Nigama Parimalam!’ could not be found these days, several Aacharyas have praised the ‘Sri Nigama Parimala Nigandu’ of Sri Thatha Desika which is a commentary on Sri Nigama Parimalam He has given innumerable grants and all the treasures that he earned by his Dig-Vijaya (Alighting people about our Sath Sampradhaya) all around the country of Bharat were utilised in glorifying Sri Emberumanar Darisanam So, as an Aacharya, Scholastic Personality, Dynamic Administrator, Royal Preceptor, Embodiment of Devotion, Strong Guiding Force of Sampradhaya we see the Mahathvam of Sri Thatha Desika, where he gave everything of his to the welfare of the society and sampradhaya. He served as a strong pillar in safeguarding our age old tradition and history. He gold plated the temples of Sri Rangam, Kanchipuram, Thirumala-Thirupati and made innumerable Vahanas, Patashalas, Yathri-Chathrams and he was the person to vitalise the Desanthri Kattalai in Temples. Hence he was praised as Sri Karya Thurantharar. Kanchipuram Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temples 100 pillared mandapam was constructed with his orders; He repaired Kanchipuram Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temples Alwar Pradhakshanam, Alavandhar Thirumuttram, Vahana Mandapam, Punya Koti Vimanam, Sri Anantha Saras and Sri Perundevi Thayars Shrine. We find innumerable inscription in and around Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple praising the contributions of this Aacharya. It is only for this Aacharya, after he left his mortal remains, the phrases praising him by the work Sri Thatha Vimsathi was inscribed as stone tablets in the prakaras of Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple. No other Aacharya of post Sri Vedantha Desikas period has this fame. He has a wonderful sannidhi at Sri Rangam Periyakoil. ‘Sri Thirukuralappan Sannidhi’ at Sri Rangam Periya koil houses Sri Thatha Desika along with His consort Sri Kamala Ammangar. This sannidhi is has all components of an independent Temple and it is situated in front of the Main Gopura Vasal of the Thiruvarangam Temple! Sri Thatha Desika is always remembered as a kind-hearted, simple living Aacharya, who lived a complete life in promoting Sri Emberumanar Darisanam and Sri Desikar Vaibhavam! He was a staunch Sri Rama Baktha and His Thiruvaradhana Perumal is ‘Sri Chakravarthy Thirumagan’ with parivarams as blessed by Sri Perundevi Thayar in a ‘Swarna Petti’ (Golden Box). Though He was ‘Sri Lakshmi Kumara’ and was having the title ‘Kalyana Koti’ as the vimana name of Sri Perundevi Thayar, He was a very modest person, who always lived a life celebrating the greatness of our Poorvacharyas! So, we could clearly observe that, Sri Thatha Desika Satrumurai is a very important day where we offer our humble obeisance at the lotus feet of this great Aacharya, who has given everything out of him for our betterment. Interestingly Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temples sole Custodians from 13th Century are the Thatha chariars. Though there are many Aacharya Purushas in this Lineage of Thathachariyars, no celebration equal to this Sri Thatha Desikan Satrumurai is being celebrated in this Temple even though administrated by Thathachariars. If Sri Thatha Desika Satrumurai is just to commemorate a scholar of Thathachariar clan, then similar uthsavams should be celebrated for all other aacharyas of this lineage. But this is not happening. With great pomp and gaiety not only Thathachariyars but also the entire Sri Vaishnava Community and the common public celebrate this Uthsavam with a thankfulness to their Aacharya who has saved their Culture, Tradition and their ways of lives for which they are known and respected all over the Globe! They feel that, It is their duty to celebrate the Aacharyans Thirunakshathram.
