Why we censured Gov. Matt Mead Platte County Republican Party Executive Committee Chairman Gary Weber, Vice Chairman Clara Powers, State Committeeman Kerry Powers and State Committeewoman Rochelle Miner Posted 4/3/14 To: Editor From: Platte County Republican Party Executive Committee Chairman Gary Weber, Vice Chairman Clara Powers, State Committeeman Kerry Powers and State Committeewoman Rochelle Miner We, the Republican Party Executive Committee of Platte County, would like to respond to Gov. Matt Meads comments about our county convention activities as cited in an AP article in The Republic , a Columbus, Ind., publication, on March 31, 2014. Interestingly, these comments have not appeared in any Wyoming publication that we have seen: Mead said Monday that Platte County was Hills home country and the delegates at the convention were clearly her supporters. Mead says the timing of the resolution is odd since it comes shortly after an audit critical of Hill. Saturdays convention was its normal convivial activity here in Platte County. We are a very like-minded, conservative county and rarely do we have a contentious meeting. This one proved to be no different. We passed a slew of state and county bylaw changes that better align the party with the will of the people and minimize the power grab from the state executive committee that we have been experiencing over the last few years. We continued with minimal county platform/resolution document updates (as they were overhauled last convention) and moved on to standing resolutions. We considered four resolutions, passed three and tabled one about returning the auditors power, pending additional research. First, we passed the wildly-successful GOP National Committeewoman Marti Halverson RNC resolution about the return of the federal lands, with little discussion and a unanimous vote. We then considered and unanimously passed a resolution demanding that the attorney general and state school board positions all be elected and not appointed. A theme of returning power to the people ran throughout the convention. Government appointees should not be making so many decisions and policies without accountability to the people. Finally, we considered the censure of Gov. Mead. It was not taken lightly and we considered every word in detail. After two amendments and a short discussion from both sides, the motion was made, the vote taken and it passed 36-1. The passing of the censure was not some off-the-cuff, frivolous idea that was considered in isolation (or only by Hill supporters), nor should it come as a surprise to or be thought odd by anyone. It was the final culmination of the overwhelming disgust of the people of Platte County about how our governor and State Legislature have overreached their authority and have disregarded the people. We will no longer stand silent about it. We have had it with the federal and state government and we are going to do something about it -- at the grassroots level. The power of the people resides in the precinct level -- at the heart of the political system. We, the elected county party officials and precinct committeemen and women, are exercising our authority. It is all of our responsibility as the electorate to hold elected government officials accountable for their actions by voting them out when necessary. If Gov. Mead cannot support our party platform and champion our Republican values of small, limited government, he does not deserve our support -- nor will he or anyone who performs similarly in public office receive it.
