Wicked is one of my favorite Broadway shows for many reasons. First, it challenges my entire belief system about the Oz story; second, it has an amazing soundtrack, including a showstopper at the end of Act One, Defying Gravity. Third, I find the underlying question in the story — Are people born Wicked? Or do they have Wickedness thrust upon them? – to be fascinating.WOW! What a great question. Although I am not sure about wickedness, I am sure about excellence. I think John William Gardner said it best; Some people have greatness thrust upon them. Few have excellence thrust upon them – they achieve it. They do not achieve it unwittingly by doing what comes naturally and they don’t stumble into it in the course of amusing themselves. All excellence involves discipline and tenacity of purpose. Both the wickedness and excellence questions have a similar theme. I am not comfortable answering the Wicked question; however, I know that people who have the discipline to attend class over the summer, and apply a persistence of purpose to their training, will be closer to excellence in September than those that do not.
