Wigan Roller Rink regulars are taking over the rink for two days of fun and fundraising! Welcome to our masqeruade event for this years WRR Fans charity event 2014. As many of you know we have held 3 charity events in total over the last 2 years. The first was held in memory of Johns sister, Maxine, raising funds for MNDA, the second in memory of our friend and fellow skater Leah, raising funds for The Walton Neuroscience Fund and the third was a joint event raising funds in memory of both of these very special ladies, raising funds for both charities. So far the charity has raised a phenomenal amount of money, Which the WRR fans charity events have contributed a total of, including gift aid, £8786.25. Here are their stories. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Maxines Story Here we are starting our fourth charity event. It doesnt seem two minutes since the golden jubilee and our first event. The event came about from Sharon Carroll suggesting we do something for charity in the name of my sister Maxine who we sadly loss to Motor Neurones. SK8 in memory of Maxine was born. My sister was one of the most amazing individuals Ive ever met... A fantastic mother and daughter. When our mum was battling cancer she nursed her and even gave up her job to work in the home where she spent her last months. Not long after she began struggling to walk. After going to the doctors she was admitted in to hospital. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with Motor Neurones Disease. Its an awful condition that in most cases is fatal. At the Walton Centre they tried all kinds and Maxine fought all the way to the end. Motor Neurons Disease slowly shuts down all of the signals being sent from your brain to your body, so that something as simple as scratching your nose becomes an impossibility. I remember towards the end Maxine communicated with a transparent board with letters on it. All we could do was watch her eyes. If there’s anything we can do to conquer this terrible disease, or make life more bearable, then we should, and I’m proud to say over the last few years so many friends have joined me in helping. Leah Davies was one of those helping on our first event. Sadly we lost her not long after. One thing I do know is that if she was here she’d be skating alongside all of us. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Leah Rebekah Davies.... Beautiful inside and out. Leah, a beautiful friend and fellow skater, was just 19 years old when she was involved in a tragic motorcycle accident in 2012. She fought an unbelievable battle for a week in Salford royal hospital but due to the extent of her injuries didnt make it. Leah had a very strong passion regarding organ donation and giving blood, which she did on a regular basis, and on her passing saved 3 peoples lives by donating her organs - amazing!! If Leah had survived the accident then her rehabilitation would have been very long and hard. This would have taken place in The Walton Neuro Centre. This is why Leahs family decided that in Leahs name a charity would be set up, Love Leah and it would raise funds for the Walton centre to help to build a home from home scheme for patients and their family who need this type of rehabilitation. Leah will always live on in so many ways, not only in the memories and hearts of all her family and friends, but also in those whom she helped to continue to live their lives with her gift and in all those who she will help with the funds she raises in her memory towards their rehabilitation. The awareness that she has raised for blood and organ donation is amazing which will help so many people in so many ways. Love Leah. -------------------------------------------------------------- Im sure you can all see why we are are so committed to doing these events which are so very close to our hearts!! Anyway, this is whats happening. The events will be held over 2 days. The evening of sat 27th sept 2014 7-10.30 and all sessions on sun 28th sept 2014. This will be held 2 weeks later on the Saturday 11 Oct 2014 There will be two sponsored skates a 12 hour and a 2 hour. The 12 hour will be held 10 am-10pm and the 2 hour 4.45 pm -6.45 prompt! Both skates require some form of masqeruade costume whether just a mask or bower but all skaters must wear something. It can be done individually or in teams, the 12 hour no more than 5 people the 2 hour no more than 3 people. All team members are required to get sponsorship and there will be a compulsory entrance fee of £10 per person when putting your name down. This will be deducted off your final sponsor money so in effect doesnt cost anything to enter just confirms your place in the skate, places will be limited especially the 12 hour. If possible please ask if your sponsors would pay upfront, most people really dont mind and it saves a lot of time and effort afterwards in collecting monies owed. We will include a section on the sponsor form which will confirm to your sponsors that we will give a certificate of confirmation if you have completed the skate and if not all monies returned. We are asking this as in the past events we have found that people have struggled to collect all sponsors. --------------------------------------------------------------------- We are also hopping to hold a charity hockey game at Atherton at some point with fun games involved, but as yet we dont have any concrete arrangements so we will keep you updated. Hope this all makes sense and you are all as excited as we are for the event it is going to great. We will be asking for help and we will be posting on a regular basis to keep you all updated.. Thanks again for your continued support, without all you wonderful people these events would never have been so successful. Thankyou xxxx
