Wiggins has twice settled for silver behind Tony Martin at the World Championships – in 2011 and 2013 – but this time got the better of his rival to top the podium, with Martin second and rising star Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands third. The 34-year-old Wiggins has had an up-and-down 2014, with victory at the Tour of California, a top ten at Paris-Roubaix and a strong ride at the Tour of Britain tempered by the disappointed of missing out on selection for Team Sky’s Tour de France squad.
