Wigmen, Hunters ally The National, Friday 12th of December, 2014 REIGNING Digicel Cup Champions Hela Wigmen are determined to lift the standards of their franchise as they prepare for another challenging season. The Papua New Guinea Hunters have done their part in helping the Wigmen by allowing their head trainer Sova Milfred, the opportunity to upgrade his knowledge of the game with a one-week stint with the Queensland Cup team. The Hunters are in off-season training in Kokopo. Milfred joined the Hunters in camp on Monday and spent most of his time with head strength and conditioning coach Jason Tassell and head trainer Solomon Kuluniasi, learning the preparation, processes and training methods used by the Hunters on a daily basis. Milfred learned the latest techniques and why they are employed in training, including the planning of sessions, rehabilitation and injury prevention, supplements programme, diet, gym training techniques, on-field fitness and skill training techniques. He took part in the daily testing that each player undergoes and the learnt the reason behind the testing. Milfred will be introduced to the high-tech side of training — Global Positioning System, electronic monitoring, game video editing and cutting and related practices. “It is a lot to take in but we hope that this helps Sova to better prepare his Wigmen franchise,” Hunters coach Michael Marum said. “The Wigmen have a pretty good setup and they may want to replicate the Hunters programme, which we are more than happy to assist with. “It shows great initiative by the Wigmen to contact the Hunters and we are more than happy to assist —wherever possible — any of the Digicel Cup clubs to improve their own programmes. “This will result in better quality players, an improved competition and players who can make the step up to the Hunters more easily in future. “George ToBata from the Agmark Gurias has been to a number of sessions and we are more than happy to help all Digicel Cup teams.” Hela Wigmen chief executive officer Andy Hetra said the club was pleased to foster a partnership with the Hunters in bridging the gap to the elite level. “It is the step in the right direction to bridge the gap between the Queensland Cup and Digicel Cup in terms of coaching expertise from the systems and procedures at the Hunters camp,” Hetra said.
