William Irons, 90 Print Staten Island Advance By Staten Island Advance on January 29, 2014 at 6:37 AM, updated January 29, 2014 at 6:38 AM William Irons, 90 STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander William H. Irons, 90, of Westerleigh, a retired Port Authority police officer and maintenance supervisor, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. A lifelong resident of Westerleigh, he graduated from Port Richmond High School. Mr. Irons served in the U.S. Navy as an electricians mate, stationed in Chicago, Long Island and New Jersey, from 1942 until 1945. He worked for 20 years as a police officer for the Port Authority, retiring in 1973. He then worked for 25 years as a maintenance supervisor for Richmond County Savings Bank. In his leisure time, Mr. Irons enjoyed playing darts and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Beacon Light Masonic Lodge and the Loyal Order of Moose. He was a member of Immanuel Union Church, Westerleigh. His wife of 62 years, the former Ethel Smith, died in 2007. His daughter, Ivy Lee Massa, died in 1971. Surviving are his two sons, William and George; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
