William John Henry Boetcker (1873–1962) You cannot bring - TopicsExpress

William John Henry Boetcker (1873–1962) You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away mans initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. The top ten are often attributed to Abraham Lincoln and in fact sound much like things he might have said. Regardless I think that they all make an incredible amount of sense... lets look at each one briefly: You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. However, if you ENCOURAGE thrift you will bring prosperity. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. However, you can lend strength to the weak to help them gain strength. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. If you encourage the wage payer (purchasing products etc) then you can help the wage earner. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. However, if you discourage hatred and encourage tolerance and love you can further the brotherhood of man. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. However if you equally support both rich and poor then the poor have the opportunities to become rich! You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than earn. In fact you get in far more trouble by overspending. if you Save and spend less then you can take cut trouble off at the root. You cannot build character and courage by taking away mans initiative and independence. The only good way to see character and build courage is to force people into conditions where they need initiative and must be independent. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. You can help temporarily, but permanently you need to teach them how to do it for themselves. You see the original statements are Conservative, the second set would be considered Liberal (by many) the conservatives and the liberals are both addressing the same topics just from opposite perspectives and with opposite perceptions. (see my post on perspectives/perceptions from earlier.) now the 7 national sins: I don’t think. I don’t know. I don’t care. I am too busy. I leave well enough alone. I have no time to read and find out. I am not interested. I don’t think. I just follow whoever seems to be the leader. I don’t know. I just guess and accept what I am fed. I don’t care. It doenst matter to me I just do my thing... I am too busy. Way too much to do to care about what is happening to everyone else. I leave well enough alone. If I get involved it will jsut take my time and effort and maybe my money. I have no time to read and find out. Its much faster to just see what everyone else is saying on the internet.. since everyone is saying it.. it must be correct, right? I am not interested. I could care less about anything except what is happening to me about me because of me or for me!
