William Peter Blatty, writer and producer of The Exorcist, - TopicsExpress

William Peter Blatty, writer and producer of The Exorcist, originally proposed the idea of Marlon Brando playing Father Karras, which delighted the studio but was rejected by William Friedkin fearing that it would become a “Brando film." Among others considered were Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, and Gene Hackman; but Friedkin wanted an actor who was relativity unknown and without all the movie star baggage. Friedkin eventually thought he had found what he was looking for in Stacey Keach, and signed him to the role. That was until he met with playwright Jason Miller after seeing his play, That Championship Season. The two didn’t hit it off to begin with and Miller had very little acting experience, but Friedkin saw something special in the then-unknown and flew him out for screen tests. Shortly after, Friedkin had Warner Bros. pay off Keach and the rest is history.
